Cynthia Nixon, the actress who played Miranda Hobbes in the popular HBO TV series Sex and the City, is likely to run for governor of New York, saying she was encouraged to do so during a TV show on Tuesday.

"I think there are a lot of people who would like me to run, and I think for a variety of reasons," Nixon said during NBC's Today show. "But I think the number one is education. We've got a real problem on our hands in New York state."

The actor, a political advocate in New York, has served on Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio's advisory board for the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. She has been particularly active on education issues.

If Nixon participates in the run, she will compete with the current Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo, an incumbent candidate in next year's Democratic primary.

Although Nixon did not confirm a future run for New York governor, she criticized Cuomo's handling of public education during the Today show, saying the gap between rich and poor has never been greater.

In response, Cuomo's spokesman Rich Azzopardi said that under Cuomo, 70 percent of funding for schools - which is at an all-time high - went to "high-needs" schools. He added Cuomo would be happy to meet with Nixon to talk about education.
