Five people were confirmed dead and one missing after rainstorm triggered a flash flood in a mountainous area of Beijing and Hebei Province, according to rescuers.

The dead were identified as four tourists and one herder. Search for a missing tourist is underway, said the rescue headquarters in Beijing's Mentougou district.

On Sunday afternoon, a downpour caused floods in Mahuangyu village in Huailai county, Hebei, which neighbors Beijing's Zhaitang township, Mentougou district.

Police received reports that 12 people were missing. As of 6 p.m. Monday, six have been found. More than 300 people joined the rescue efforts.

Zhaitang is a tourist attraction containing mountains, rivers, old country houses and temples.
