A bank in Northeast China was able to save nearly 160,000 yuan ($23,552) in moldy bills for a man who said they had become waterlogged from a leaky pipe in his garage.
The man, surnamed Wang, said he had been refused by a number of banks before taking his soggy stacks to an Industrial and Commercial Bank of China branch in Changchun, Jilin Province on May 25.
There employees got to work cleaning and counting the cash, which involved using boiling hot water to kill the black mold, news portal ycwb.com reported.
After hours of cleaning, employees successfully recovered 159,900 yuan, which they then exchanged for new bills.
However, instead of opening an account with the accommodating bank, Wang picked up his cash and walked out.
It was not reported why Wang had stored the cash in his garage.
