Sir Roger Moore, best known for starring in the James Bond movie franchise, died in Switzerland on Tuesday aged 89 after a battle with cancer, his family said.

A statement from his family posted on Twitter confirmed the death: "With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated."

The British actor was the third James Bond and took the title role in seven Bond films, from 1973's Live and Let Die to 1985's A View to Kill. He later devoted himself to humanitarian work, serving as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 1991.

Sir Roger will have a private funeral in Monaco in accordance with his wishes, the family statement said.

It added: "We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement."
