A Chinese man is making international headlines after marrying a robot that he built himself.

Zheng Jiajia, 31, is an artificial intelligence (AI) expert from southeast China's city of Hangzhou. He decided to build his would-be wife after a recent heartbreak.

"He was rejected by a woman he had a crush on, and he's been single since. But his relatives were constantly nagging him about his marital status," one of Zheng's friends told local newspaper Qianjiang Evening News. Zheng dismissed his friend's comment as a joke.

Zheng graduated from Zhejiang University in 2011 with a master's degree in artificial intelligence. He started his own AI business last year. His first masterpiece is his one-year-old robot wife, Yingying.

Yingying is capable of identifying images and Chinese characters. She also recognizes people she has met and can say a few words to communicate.

After two months of "dating", Zheng married Yingying in a traditional ceremony attended by his mother and friends in Hangzhou.

Zheng said he will continue to upgrade his wife to enable her to walk, move, and even do housework. A perfect, if artificial, ending.
