Shanghai seniors surpass 83-year life expectancy

Latest statistics about elderly citizens in Shanghai show that the average life expectancy of local seniors has exceeded 83 years.

The figure is much higher than the national average of 76.1 and is on par with Japan and Switzerland, two countries with the highest average life expectancies in the world.

In 2016, the population of Shanghai residents aged 60 years or above increased 5 percent year on year, to 218,400, making the elderly 32 percent of the total population in Shanghai.

Seniors in Shanghai are well-known for their healthy physical and mental states.

According to statistics, 93 percent of local seniors in Shanghai are completely independent; 80 percent can hear clearly; 80 percent have okay to very clear eyesight; and close to 80 percent feel they are never lonely.
