The city's registered population of people aged 60 and above was 4.58 million by the end of 2016, a year-on-year increase of 5 percent, according to data released by the Shanghai Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau and Shanghai Statistics Bureau.

The statistics also revealed that the city's life expectancy remains above 83, and there were 796,600 residents aged 80 or above last year, up 16,100 from 2015.
