Chinese people are happier than those from Pakistan, Greece, Portugal and India, according to a UN report issued Monday.

China ranked 79th among 155 countries in happiness between 2014 and 2016, said the World Happiness Report 2017 produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global initiative launched by the United Nations. It beats countries such as Greece (87), Portugal (89) and India (122).

"Happiness comes from prosperity. Citizens will be happy if their country is prosperous and rich. Greece is facing big problems because of debt and massive corruption in the government and the public sector," Yanis, a Greek living in China, told the Global Times.

He said that many well-educated young people cannot even find a job in Greece.

Norway came at the top of the list. Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden rounded out the top 10 countries.

South Sudan, Liberia, Guinea, Togo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Central African Republic were at the bottom of the ranking.

The happiness rankings are based on six factors: per capita gross domestic product, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, social support and absence of corruption in government or business.
