China on Thursday denounced a terrorist attack at a hospital in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Wednesday that killed at least 40 people.

"We are shocked at the terrorist attack and strongly condemn the act," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang at a daily press briefing.

China will continue to firmly support the unremitting efforts of the Afghan government and people to fight terrorism and safeguard national stability and security.

He also expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families.

More than 40 people were killed and over 70 others wounded after four suicide bombers struck Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital in the fortified Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district Wednesday morning.

The Amaq news agency affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) said the terror group claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to figures released by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), more than 3,490 civilians were killed and over 7,920 others were injured in conflict-related incidents across Afghanistan last year.
