Chinese police Wednesday escorted a fugitive from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the first time since the two nations signed an extradition treaty in 2004, according to the public security authority.

With the cooperation of UAE police and the Chinese embassy in the UAE, a suspect on an Interpol red notice, wanted for contract fraud, was extradited.

According to police in Shanghai's Putuo district, in September 2007 the suspect, surnamed Kan, falsely claimed that he was authorized to sell a property in Shanghai, swindling deposits of 2 million yuan (around 289,000 U.S. dollars).

He fled to the UAE from Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, in March 2008. In December 2015 the people's procuratorate of Putuo approved his arrest on charges of contract fraud.

Kan was apprehended by UAE police in January 2016. In February last year, China requested his extradition based on the treaty between China and the UAE.

On March 7, UAE police transferred him to a team with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security in Dubai Airports.

Another red notice suspect, surnamed Xu, suspected of fraud was repatriated at the same time.
