A former senior official with the Chinese mainland's Taiwan affairs body stood trial in Henan Province for graft on Wednesday.

The graft trial of Gong Qinggai, the former deputy head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, was heard by Anyang Intermediate People's court.

Prosecutors allege that Gong took advantage of his authority during his postings in Fujian Province to help entities and individuals aquire land, adjust plans and obtain government subsidies. Moreover, he either requested or accepted bribes valued at 53.53 million yuan (7.78 million U.S. dollars) directly or through his family.

Gong made a final statement to the court, in which he pled guilty and expressed remorse.

The court has ajourned to decide on the verdict.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC announced in January 2016 that Gong was under investigation for suspected disciplinary violations.
