Shanghai Museum, built in 1996, will start an overall restoration project starting this year after 21 years of nonstop operation. Curator Yang Zhigang says that the museum must close every Monday to facilitate the construction, which will take over a year to complete.
The precise starting date will be released later. The restoration of Shanghai Museum consists of two phases, the first to eliminate safety hazards in the venue and the second to upgrade its services.
