China welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to ease sanctions on Sudan, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said at a routine press briefing on Wednesday.

China opposes unilateral sanctions imposed on a country, and hopes for an earlier and comprehensive elimination of the unilateral sanctions on Sudan, according to spokesperson Hua Chunying.

Obama announced the decision on Jan. 13. The U.S. government listed Sudan as a country supporting terrorism in 1993 and started sanctions in 1997.
