The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) tested 257,000 food samples nationwide throughout 2016, finding 96.8 percent of food up to standard.

According to a statement released by the CFDA on Monday, tests for unsafe ingredients, including melamine in diary products and baby formula, Aflatoxin B1 in wheat flour, Sudan-red in egg products, did not uncover abnormalities.

Of 2,532 samples of baby formula collected in 2016, 22 contained ingredients not allowed by national standards, the CFDA said.

The most outstanding problems in food safety according to inspection results include the excessive use of additives, microorganic pollution, and contamination with heavy metal and biological toxins.
