Singles in East China's Jiangxi province are the most pressured by their parents to get married, according to the 2016 Dating and Marriage Report released by online dating website Shijijiayuan.

Ranking of most pressure to marry across China

The report shows that nearly 60 percent of single men and half of single women have been pushed by their parents to get married, and the figure has nearly doubled from last year.

Material women and stingy men are most hated

Most singles think they have not encountered their ideal partner yet. Women who are highly cultured and steeped in propriety are most favored by men, while family-oriented and considerate men are most favored by women.

On the contrary, being too focused on money, causing problems out of nothing and narrow mindedness in women are top three characteristics that are hated by men. While being stingy, haggling over every ounce, having feminine qualities and narrow mindedness in men are the top four unacceptable traits by women.

'Having a child' and 'economic strength' necessities before marriage

About 63 percent of men care about whether their partner is willing to have a child, followed by 58 percent of men who care about their partner's medical history and 41 percent who care about whether or not they live with their parents.

About 81 percent of women are concerned about men's economic strength, followed by their medical history and sexual ability.

About 26 percent of women want to command financial power in the family, while 17 percent of men hold the same opinion. But a more prevalent idea is "keeping finances independently but setting up a common savings account for women to command".

Betrothal money starting from $10,000

Most parts of China hold the tradition of the bridegroom giving betrothal gifts to the bride's family. The average starting price of betrothal gifts is 69,416 yuan ($10,044) across China.

Shanxi province tops the provincial rank with 103,466 yuan, followed by Zhejiang province with 98,511 yuan and Tianjin municipality with 97,162 yuan.

Besides betrothal gifts, more than half of women think men should buy a house, car and pay for house decorations on their own. About 35 percent of women are willing to share the cost of household appliances, furniture and house decorations.
