Four people were detained Thursday for dumping more than 2,000 tons of garbage into the Yangtze River section at Taicang City, east China's Jiangsu Province.

Police in Taicang city said the four worked for a garbage disposal company in east China's Zhejiang Province. They transported the garbage by ship from Zhejiang to neighboring Jiangsu on Saturday night to dump it.

Shanghai, southeast of Taicang, also reported floating garbage in its waters.
