A court in Beijing's Mentougou district has issued a personal protection order to a man suffering domestic abuse at the hands of his wife, the first such order issued to a man by the capital's courts, local media reported Sunday.

The man surnamed Zhang filed the application after divorce proceedings were dismissed by the court because his wife surnamed Li is currently breastfeeding, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

According to Zhang, his wife beat him badly in May and he was diagnosed with multiple injuries at the time. He added they have regularly quarreled since getting married in 2014. Zhang called the police on Tuesday after he was beaten by Li yet again.

His wife's violent behavior has hurt not only himself but also their child, and Li has also insulted Zhang's mother, creating an "unbearable situation," according to Zhang.

Local courts in South China's Hainan Province, Central China's Hubei Province and East China's Anhui Province have also issued personal protection orders to men since China enacted its first Anti-Domestic Violence Law on March 1, local media reported.

The law says that anyone who suffers from or faces the threat of domestic violence can apply for a personal protection order at a local court.

Once the order is granted, the court may prohibit the abuser from harassing, stalking or contacting the applicant and his or her close relatives, order the abuser to move out of a shared home, or adopt various other measures to protect the applicant, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
