An airplane carrying members of a Brazilian football team has crashed in Colombia, leaving six survivors, the country's aviation authorities said Tuesday.

The aircraft that crashed after disappearing in Colombian airspace was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members.

The crash site is in a mountainous area outside the Colombian city of Medellin, the destination of the chartered plane as the Brazilian football team was expected to take part in a game Wednesday.

According to airport authorities at the scheduled destination, poor weather conditions have made the crash site difficult to reach.

It is not immediately known what caused the crash.
