Jing'an district will be providing more convenient exercise facilities by turning the rooftops and refuge areas of local office towers and apartment complexes into playgrounds and gyms, the Jiefang Daily reported.

Such playgrounds and gyms will charge cheaper fees than at commercial ones. A new gym located on the 38th floor of Zhongyi Building on Nanjing Road West charges 300 yuan ($44.02) per year for one person. The gym was co-invested by Jing'an district's sports bureau along with the building's property management.

The district has also launched a new app on which people can rent fitness equipment from these gyms for free or watch free online fitness videos.

According to the sports bureau, by 2020 the district will set up at least 10 playgrounds, 10 walking trails and 80 public fitness facilities, so that every citizen will be within 15 minutes of such a facility.

The city's largest rooftop football court, Jing'an Stadium near Wenshui Road Station on metro Line 1, will finish construction by next March.
