A man was shot and injured during a protest march against the election of Donald Trump in the city of Portland, the U.S. state of Oregon, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in the early morning hours of Saturday, Portland Police Bureau said on its Twitter account, adding that preliminary information indicated that a suspect was in a vehicle on the Morrison Bridge and there was a confrontation with someone in the protest.

The victim was provided medical aid and transported to a Portland hospital for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries, it said.

Several witnesses told investigators that the suspect was a male, late teens, who fled the area likely in the vehicle described as a gray or silver sedan.

The shooting came after Friday night protests turned violent, when police used tear gas in response to "burning projectiles being thrown at officers," the police said.

A large crowd gathered in front of City Hall and about 1,000 people marched through the city, disrupting traffic, the police said.

Since Trump's election victory on Wednesday, people took to the streets in such U.S. cities as Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco to protest the billionaire's election.
