Following a successful tour in UK, France, Germany and Austria, the new avant-grade Yueju Opera play "Coriolanus and Du Liniang" will be staged at the Majestic Theater on November 11 and 12.
The play, a program of the ongoing 18th China Shanghai International Arts Festival is the latest production of the Little Hundred Flowers Yueju Troupe of Zhejiang Province, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu.
Famous characters from the plays by Shakespeare and Tang are dramatically combined in the show to depict legends of both the West and the East.
Celebrated Yueju Opera artist Mao Weitao plays the decorated Roman soldier Coriolanus, a character from the tragedy of Shakespeare. Du Liniang is a famous character from Tang's representative romance "The Peony Pavilion."
Director Guo Xiaonan said that the innovative play is about existence, justice, freedom and humanity.
