Cross-Strait experts have given high appraisals of remarks made by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on relations between mainland and Taiwan.

Xi made a speech on Tuesday underscoring the importance of the 1992 Consensus and the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations during his meeting with a delegation led by Hung Hsiu-chu, leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan.

"Safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the core national interest, and it is a line that cannot be crossed," Xi said in the speech.

His words have shown steadfast resolve, full confidence and competence in containing "Taiwan independence," said Ni Yongjie, deputy director of the Shanghai Institute of Taiwan Studies.

According to Tang Yonghong, head of the economic research center of Xiamen University's Taiwan Research Institute, the general secretary's speech addressed common concerns across the Taiwan Strait and will play a leading role in boosting cross-Strait ties.

Xi's remarks on jointly carrying forward the fine traditions of Chinese culture and boosting benefits for compatriots on both sides show the mainland's sincerity and goodwill in advancing cross-Strait relations, Tang said.

Wu Jung-yuan, organizer of the "Cross-Strait Peace and Development Forum" and chairman of Taiwan's Labor Party, said the six-point proposal by Xi indicated the fact that the mainland and Taiwan belong to an inseparable community of common destiny.

Xi advocated social and economic integrative development across the Strait, paying special attention to the grassroots and young people in Taiwan. His words are full of good will, embodying the idea that "we are one family," Wu added.

Yu Muming, chairman of Taiwan's New Party, spoke highly of Xi's remarks about upholding the 1992 Consensus and one-China principle.

Yu said national reunification and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation have long been the pursuit of all Chinese people. People on both sides of the Strait should make concerted efforts to achieve the goal, he said.
