Shanghai is one of the first pilot ports to adopt the new 144-hour visa-free transit sticker. The QR code on the sticker contains personal information about the traveler, according to thepaper.cn.

Compared with traditional entry permits stamped on a passport, this sticker can be placed on a passport to shorten the wait time at customs clearance. It also is more effective against forgery. The QR code provides all the pertinent data of foreign travelers, which they in turn can use at hotel check-ins.

Apart from Shanghai, airports in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, will also join the pilot program. An estimated 25,000 travelers have transited through various ports of entry in Shanghai since the 144-hour visa-exemption transit policy was implemented January.
