China's top music college seeks professionals worldwide

The Central Conservatory of Music, China's top music college that is located in Beijing, released a recruitment announcement on its official WeChat account Wednesday, seeking global music professionals in orchestral performance.

The Central Conservatory of Music, under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China, is a world-renowned institute of music that represents the highest caliber of music education in China, providing a comprehensive range of specialized programs. It is also China's only art academy listed among the national leading universities supported by the state "Project 211".

With its vision to become a world-renowned conservatory with top-notch programs in music education, and in order to better prepare future generations of music professional leaders for the development of art in China, the CCOM decided to establish a professional symphony orchestra, positioned as a state-level platform for music production and performance. The Symphony Orchestra of the Central Conservatory of Music, as established, is now recruiting a variety of music professionals in orchestral performance from around the world who are interested in becoming a member of the ensemble.

Opening Positions

— Symphony Orchestra: professional performers of orchestral instruments including: violin, viola, cello, contrabass, flute (piccolo), oboe (english horn), clarinet (bass clarinet), bassoon (contrabassoon), French horn, trumpet, tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, and harp;

— Performing Management Department: stage crew and artistic administrators.

Duties

— Symphony Orchestra:

1.Participating in ensemble performances (concerts, operas, art festivals, concert seasons, national and international music competitions, demos of new works, etc.)

2. Assuming teaching duties when necessary.

3.Performers must have their own musical instruments (with the exception of special musical instruments).

— Performing Management Department:

Musical librarian services, rehearsals and concert performance arrangements.

Compensation and benefits

For Concertmaster: A highly competitive compensation and benefits package based on professional capabilities (negotiable);

For principals, tutti players and musician fellows: Attractive compensation with good benefits based on orchestral positions;

For stage crew and artistic administrators: Generous compensation and benefits available after successful completion of the probation period.

All musicians and staff of the Symphony Orchestra are engaged under a contract of service, and covered by China's statutory five social insurance schemes and one housing fund program. A six-month probation applies to all successful applicants. (Probationary pay to be announced.)

Recruitment reqirements

Recruitment is open to all applicants from around the world, regardless of nationality, location, gender or age. Applicants for performer roles should have good professional ethics and excellent performing skills, and hold at least a bachelor's degree or have an equivalent qualification. Top qualified candidates are selected on a voluntary application basis and through public auditions and exams.

How to apply

— Please read the "Recruitment Announcement of the Symphony Orchestra of the Central Conservatory of Music" carefully on the front page of the CCOM website (http://en.ccom.edu.cn/);

— Download and complete the "Application Form"

— Submit the completed application form with electronic copies of your valid personal ID, diploma certificates and CV, along with a specific piece of music selected for audition (please indicate the title, name of the composer and duration of the piece) via email to zhaopin@ccom.edu.cn. Please be sure to send the email with the subject line: "Symphony Orchestra – Applied Position – Name of the Applicant".

Applications must be submitted between Sep. 26 and Oct. 15, 2016.

The applicants should bring the originals of valid ID and diploma certificates, along with a CV, for the audition and exam.

Audition and exam

— Symphony Orchestra:

1. Audition based on a prepared piece: Applicants will play one prepared movement of a concerto or sonata, or other solo pieces to demonstrate the highest level of their musical and technical abilities;

2. Audition based on compulsory pieces: Applicants will play orchestral excerpts designated by the audition panel (Please read the "The Symphony Orchestra of the Central Conservatory of Music Recruitment Announcement" carefully on the front page of the CCOM website (http://en.ccom.edu.cn/); Download and complete the "A List of Orchestral Excerpts for the Audition");

3.Sight-reading: The piece to sight-read will be given at the audition.

— Performing Management Department: Professional skills testing and interview.
