Activities for the commemoration of International Day of Peace were held Wednesday in Yinchuan, capital of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Incumbent and former politicians from 33 countries, representatives from NGOs, think tanks and Chinese scholars participated in the event.

Vice President Li Yuanchao delivered a keynote speech, saying that the International Day of Peace was established by the UN 35 years ago to reflect the common aspiration of the international community for peace and development.

As pointed out by Chinese President Xi Jinping, society is evolving into a global community of shared destiny where everyone is interdependent, and peaceful development and common prosperity represent the right path to take, Li said.

He hoped that all countries "resolve disagreements and disputes through dialogue and consultation," adding that countries should respect and accommodate each other, have friendly consultations, work together to safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and create a peaceful and stable international environment.

Li also hoped that countries can achieve common prosperity through win-win results to "make sure the pie keeps getting bigger and better."

The vice president suggested "rising to common challenges of humankind by innovating the global governance institution" to reflect more evenly the interests and appeal of all the countries, especially the developing ones.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent a congratulatory letter to the opening ceremony of the activities that were held by the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament, UN China offices and government of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
