The average Chinese score for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is 78, while the worldwide average sits at 81, reports the Educational Testing Service or ETS in the United States.
The Chinese average has hardly changed in the last few years, say analysts.
In the four sections of TOEFL, Chinese scored on average a 20 in both reading and writing. The results reflect that Chinese taking the test excel in vocabulary and grammar, but lack reading original English books.
Chinese also fell behind in the listening and speaking sections. Students wishing to improve in these areas are encouraged to listen to English radio programs and to converse with native English speakers.
