More than 3,400 suspects have been seized in a police campaign to crack down on online crime.

The Ministry of Public Security on Monday said that since May, the campaign had deleted 122,000 pieces of illegal online information, closed 23,000 accounts and punished 4,207 websites.

The campaign also smashed more than 300 criminal rings, it added.

In one case, police in Chongqing detained nine people suspected of online fraud that involved over 20 million yuan (3 million U.S. dollars), the statement said.

Additionally, nine websites involved in illegal gun sales, citizen privacy, drugs, bankcard fraud and pornography were ordered to rectify their violations. Another four websites were also warned to rectify for spreading software containing viruses.
