Xiao Tian, former deputy director of China's General Administration of Sport, stood trial on Thursday on charges of accepting bribes.

Xiao was accused of taking advantage of his various official posts from 1997 to 2014 to seek benefits for others in project construction, sporting events, job arrangements and personnel promotion.

He accepted bribes worth more than 7.96 million yuan (1.19 million U.S. dollars), according to the indictment.

Xiao pleaded guilty at the end of the trial and expressed remorse.

Nanyang People's Procuratorate in central China's Henan Province filed the charges with Nanyang Intermediate People's Court.

A total of 50 people, including members of the public and journalists, attended the hearing.

The verdict will be announced at a later date.
