China's media watchdog has required entertainment programs to avoid spoofing classic works of Chinese literature and chasing a "Western lifestyle" in a recent circular further regulating social and entertainment programs.
The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) recently pointed out that some TV programs feature a lack of "positive energy" and correct values, as well as poor aesthetic tastes, the Xinhua News Agency reported Monday.
SAPPRFT vowed to forbid entertainment programs from promoting becoming famous overnight, flaunting wealth and hedonism, and encouraging fanaticism for pop stars, riches and Internet celebrities, Xinhua reported.
The administration also said it they would punish institutions that fail to obey the rules by suspending their programming or revoking their production licenses.
Those programs and institutions that fail to meet the regulator's requirements will be banned from participating in awards activities held by SAPPRFT or relevant guilds, said Xinhua.
The circular echoes feedback provided by the Communist Party of China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection after its inspection of SAPPRFT earlier this year.
