Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend a foreign ministers' meeting of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Japan, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang said on Thursday.

The exact date of the annual trilateral meeting is still being negotiated by the three sides, said Lu, adding that Wang's attendance will not involve a bilateral visit.

China's policy toward Sino-Japanese relations is consistent and clear, Lu said when answering a question about whether Wang will exchange views with the Japanese side on improving bilateral ties.

China urges Japan to properly handle major sensitive issues and make efforts to improve bilateral relations in accordance with the four political documents and the four-point principled agreement between the two countries, Lu stressed.

The foreign ministers' meeting, established in 2007, is part of a mechanism for the three East Asian countries to discuss issues including cooperation, leaders' meeting preparation and major regional and global issues. Japan is this year's coordinator of the mechanism.
