The government shut down 3,612 websites in the first half of this year, 811 of which were closed for spreading pornography.

About 869,000 pieces of "harmful information," including 529,000 items deemed "erotic," were deleted in the six months, said a statement from the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications Thursday.

The cracking-down operations were targeted at live broadcasts and individuals using cloud storage services to spread pornography and make money from it, the statement said.

The authorities uncovered and dealt with around 30 cases, in which suspects used social networks such as WeChat to distribute obscene content. Many of the suspects involved were underage, it said.
