'Jason Bourne' debuts at top of the box office in North America

The latest installment of the popular spy dramas "Bourne" was the top-grossing movie in North American theaters this weekend.

Universal's "Jason Bourne," once again starring Matt Damon as the titular hero, earned 60 million U.S. dollars from 4,026 locations in its debut weekend, according to estimated figures released by comScore on Sunday.

"Jason Bourne," the fifth installment and fourth starring Damon, delivered the second largest domestic opening in the "Bourne" franchise behind only "The Bourne Ultimatum," which opened with 69.2 million dollars in 2007.

"Jason Bourne" scored an "A-" from opening day audiences on CinemaScore and received a so-so 56 percent of recommendation rating from critics on RotenTomatoes. The audience for "Jason Bourne" was 55 percent male, among whom 60 percent aged over 35.

"Jason Bourne" brought in additional 50.1 million dollars from 46 overseas markets giving this 120 million budget film a total of 110.1 million dollars worldwide in its first weekend.

Another long-running film franchise took second place, with Paramount's "Star Trek Beyond" earning 24 million dollars in theaters in the United States and Canada. The film has grossed over 105.7 million dollars in 10 days of releasing.

The comedy "Bad Moms" debuted in third place with 23.4 million dollars, becoming the fifth largest R-rated opening of the year.

"The Secret Life of Pets" was fourth with 18.2 million dollars, while the horror film "Lights Out" made 10.8 million dollars.

The remaining top 10 movies in the United States and Canada this weekend were "Ice Age: Collision Course" (10.5 million dollars), "Ghostbusters" (9.8 million), "Nerve" (9 million), "Finding Dory" (4.2 million) and "The Legend Of Tarzan"(2.4 million).
