Gong Qinggai, a former senior Taiwan affairs official, has been placed under investigation on suspicion of bribery, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) announced Friday.

The SPP said Gong is also subject to compulsory measures, a Chinese legal term that can cover arrest, detention, summons, bail pending trial, or residential surveillance.

Gong was deputy head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

China's top anti-graft body, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), said in a statement last month that Gong was dishonest in reports about his personal assets, accepted gifts, used his post to seek benefits for other people's businesses, and made use of luxury cars he did not own.

The CCDI expelled him from the CPC and his post.
