Infectious diseases kill 1,285 in China in April

A total of 1,285 people died as a result of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland in April, official data showed on Wednesday.

According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, there were 653,680 cases of infectious diseases reported on the mainland last month.

Two cases of cholera, categorized as a Class A infectious disease under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, were reported with no deaths.

More than 303,000 cases were classified as Class B infectious diseases, and they resulted in 1,259 deaths. Viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhoea and bacterial and amoebic dysentery accounted for 92 percent of cases in this category.

Category C diseases were responsible for close to 350,000 cases and 26 deaths. Foot and mouth disease, infectious diarrhea, and influenza were the most prevalent in this category, accounting for 95 percent of cases.
