China will have 4.45 million nurses by 2020, with more than 1 million new nurses to be trained before then, a health official said Wednesday.

If this target is met, there will be about 3.14 nurses for every 1,000 members of the population, compared with the current 2.36, said Ma Xiaowei, deputy head of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, at a symposium marking the International Nurses Day on May 12.

China had 3.24 million registered nurses by the end of 2015, a 58-percent increase from 2010.

Health authorities will also train nurses so they have more expertise and can provide better medical services, Ma said.
