A dust devil -- a small isolated whirlwind -- picked up a pupil on a primary school campus in northwest China's Gansu Province on Wednesday afternoon.
The dust devil hit the yard of Yuanquan Primary School in Guazhou County at 4:25 p.m. while a sports meeting was held there, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.
A 9-year-old girl from grade three was lifted more than two meters into the air then slammed to the ground. She was sent to a local hospital but had only sustained minor injuries.
Lu Jiancheng, director of the county's meteorological bureau, said the county had never seen such a powerful dust devil before.
