Despite the scores of new luxury five-star hotels being opened by major hospitality conglomerates along the Yangtze River Delta every year, there is still a handful of boutique businesses that have managed to thrive, thanks to their unique branding and focus on exclusivity. Here are three of the most prominent ones.

Aman Fayun Hangzhou

Opened in 2010, this 42-room luxury resort used to be the largest Aman resort in China. The hotel, which features a stylishly quaint design, is situated 20 minutes away from West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province and is a cultural heritage project that saw an ancient village dating back to the 18th century remodeled into what it is today. The Aman Fayun Hangzhou shares the same parent company as Qin's Ahn Luh Resorts.

Fuchun Resort

Nestled amidst hillside tea plantations, this resort is designed by one of the world's most sought-after designers, Jean-Michel Gathy, whose works include the Cheval Blanc in France. His latest work along the Fuchun River in Hangzhou is dubbed as his first contemporary project in China that interprets east China's unique architectural style.

Naked Retreats

Founded by a South African entrepreneur in China, Naked Retreats has since its establishment become a popular destination for people looking to escape the summer heat. Located a two-hour drive from Shanghai, it is well-known for its eco-friendly approach. Another wing of the resort, called Naked Stables, was the first project in China to be awarded the LEED platinum certification.
