2016 marks the Year of China-India Tourism. And Chitkara University in India's northern city of Chandigarh has hosted a Chinese fashion show, in which hundreds of local students took part.

Fans, traditional Chinese instruments, and Chinese characters.

These were the backdrop for around 250 students from various Indian colleges and universities, who worked hard to showcase Chinese fabrics, fashion, and culture.

"We've been preparing for this for about three weeks. We did a lot of research. The costumes, the jewelry, everything is done by ourselves," a team member said, Indian student.

The number of people travelling between China and India is expected to surpass a million in 2016, and the fashion show, organized by the China National Tourism Administration, is part of efforts to reawaken Silk-Road connections.

"The fashion show among Indian college students helps deepen their understanding about traditional Chinese culture, and at the same time we hope more Indian tourists would be attracted to come to China and join the Silk-Road tour," said Li Qianguo, director of China National Tourism Adm., Indian Office.

"It was a good combination of the two countries. We always talk about India-China relationship. So it was the first step, I think, in this day, to start the relationship," said Dr. Madhu Chitkara, vice-chancellor of Chitkara Univ., Punjab.

The vice-chancellor argues such events will result in better ties and understanding.
