A senior Chinese diplomat on Wednesday said that China, already being among the largest contributors to the UN and other international organizations, will play a bigger role in multilateral diplomacy and make greater contributions to the UN with its continuous growth of the comprehensive national strength.

Wu Hailong, permanent representative of China to the UN at Geneva, said that in the world today, multilateralism with the UN at its core still plays an irreplaceable role and is the key to addressing global challenges.

"Stronger UN will definitely make a better world," he noted.

Wu made the remarks during his farewell reception in Geneva. The senior Chinese diplomat took the office of his current position two years ago after his mission in Brussels, and he will leave for Beijing for a new position early next month.

In his remarks Wu also revealed that he will soon sign an agreement with Michael Moller, director-general of the UN at Geneva, on a 3-million-U.S. dollar donation by China for the UN's Strategic Heritage Plan.

"There will be a new conference room called China Room at the UN headquarters, or the Palais de Nations, in Geneva in the coming years," he said.

According to him, China has always been a strong supporter of and an active participant in the UN.

"In my diplomatic career, I have witnessed China's integration into the world and its gradual steps towards the center of the international stage. I am honored and very proud of being part of this process," said Wu.
