Just two days to go before Chinese New Year and the much anticipated CCTV's Spring Festival gala. Ethnic dances has always been a key part of the gala. And this year, modern music will find expression in traditional moves, as China celebrates the cultural diversity of its peoples.

The dance number entitled "Auspicious" combines a folk tradition of the Yi people with pop music.

The routine is derived from dance ceremonies used in celebrating harvests or weddings, and can be traced back to China's Han Dynasty.

These dancers are not the only Yi troupe to perform at the Gala. Most of the performers are non-professionals. Prior to rehearsals, many were working on farms. This year's Gala is also marked by reinvention of tradition.

On New Year's Eve, the vast audience will get a sense of China's broad cultural reach both geographically and historically.
