An 85-year-old residential lane was rocked by fire, the largest in recent decades, on Thursday noon.
Three buildings at Renchangli on Jiangpu Road in Yangpu District took the burnt of the fire. Four adjacent buildings were also affected.
Residents suspect that burnt wires from an electric kettle was the cause of the fire.
About 20 residents will have to live at hotels with dim chance of making it back before the Spring Festival.
Doctors checked on four people after the fire. Police said there were no injuries or casualties, adding that the cause of the fire was being investigated.
"The neighborhood is in such a dilapidated state that it was a matter before a fire broke out," a man surnamed Fu, whose parents house was affected, said.
