Senior publicity official Liu Qibao on Friday urged heavy-fisted crackdown on illegal publications and online pornography in a bid to regulate the cultural environment.

The Internet is a major battlefield for the crackdown, said Liu, head of the Communist Party of China Central Committee's publicity department, at a teleconference.

He also called for punishing fake journalists and clamping down on unauthorized newspapers and reporter stations.

Authorities should strengthen supervision over the border entry, printing and delivery of publications and strictly control the circulation of illegal ones, he said.

Several institutions and individuals were commended for their performance in the area during the teleconference.
