Live German ants, succulent plants and human placenta extracts were among the 9,217 kg of illegal imports intercepted in Sichuan Province in 2015, local authorities said on Monday.

Rising e-commerce is helping bring more foreign imports to China, but many of them are invasive species and could cause environmental hazards, said the Sichuan Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau on Monday.

Of the world's 100 most threatening invasive species, 51 have been found in China, according to official statistics.

Chinese customs intercepted just 500 batches of foreign pests in 2000. By 2013, this number had shot up to 610,000.

Sources with the bureau said the public should be cautious of foreign products and get official approval if such products need to be brought inland.
