"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" set a record at the U.S. domestic box office, Walt Disney Co. announced Wednesday.

Though exact figures have not yet been released, the latest installment of Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" science fiction franchise and directed by J.J. Abrams, surpassed the 760.5 million-U.S. dollar record set by director James Cameron's epic "Avatar," according to the company.

As of Tuesday, the film had grossed 758.2 million dollars domestically.

Internationally, the film grossed 799.1 million dollars through Tuesday, giving it a global total of more than 1.55 billion dollars. But it still has some work ahead to overtake "Avatar" with a global gross of 2.79 billion dollars or another Cameron blockbuster "Titanic," which grossed 2.19 billion dollars globally.
