The Sydney Fish Market is expecting more than 110,000 people to walk through its doors in the lead up to Christmas.

The market, in the inner-Sydney suburb of Pyrmont, will trade for 36 hours from 5:00am on Wednesday to 5:00pm on Christmas Eve.

It is the 20th year the Sydney Fish Market has opened for 36 hours before Christmas.

This year, it is expected shoppers will buy 660 tonnes of seafood, including 130 tonnes of prawns and 924,000 oysters, or 427 oysters a minute.

Stephanie Williams from the Sydney Fish Market said each year the amount sold increased slightly.

"I do think seafood is becoming more and more of a popular option for Christmas, given we're in the Southern Hemisphere it's a nice light option," she said.

"Easter is a really popular time for seafood as well.

"Christmas does remain our busiest time of year, so that's definitely followed closely behind by Easter and Chinese New Year."

She recommended people catch public transport to the market if they were planning to visit before Christmas.

"The car park does get really full so we recommend that people catch the light rail, we have a stop just across the road or get a bus from the city," she said.

"Usually it's hugely popular with locals, it's a real Sydneysider tradition just before Christmas, but anyone who's visiting Sydney during this time, it's worth popping down for the experience."
