One runner collapsed during the Fuzhou International Marathon in southeast China and died of apparent heart attacks on Sunday.

The organizers said in a statement that the over-40-year-old runner surnamed Lu collapsed about 10 kilometers into the half marathon race on Sunday morning and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The organizers are "deeply saddened by the tragic death," said the statement.

Ethiopian runners swept the men's and women's full marathon titles.
