China has called on countries to work together to stop terrorist funding amid Russian and Turkish claims that either side is involved in oil trade with Islamic State (IS) militants.

"China hopes the international community will make joint efforts to oppose and combat terrorism in all forms," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a regular news briefing on Thursday when asked about the war of words.

"We support all countries to enhance coordination and cooperation to block the funding of terrorism and hope the United Nations Security Council will continue to play a constructive role," Hua said.

Russia's deputy defence minister has reportedly accused Turkey's President Erdogan and his family of personal involvement in buying stolen oil from IS.

Erdogan shot back on Thursday that Turkey had proof Russia was trading with the militants.

Relations between Moscow and Ankara have taken a nosedive after the latter downed a Russian warplane along the Syrian border on Nov. 24, claiming national airspace violation.
