A man apparently committed suicide yesterday after attacking his girlfriend with a knife during a dispute in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, police said.
The incident took place about 8am near Hongyin Road in Nicheng Town, they said.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man surnamed Pan and his girlfriend, surnamed Li, both of whom had been stabbed, police said.
When medics arrived, Pan was declared dead at the scene, while Li was taken to Shanghai No. 6 People's Hospital for treatment.
A report by local news portal Nanhui News quoted a witness as saying that Pan attacked Li with a knife as they were riding electric bicycles along the road.
After stabbing her, he turned the knife on himself, plunging it into his stomach, the person said.
Staff at the hospital treating Li told Shanghai Daily last night that her condition was not life-threatening, but that one of her fingers had been severed and that she had suffered wounds to her head.
Police said they are treating Pan's death as a suicide, but are still investigating.
