A reserve worker was killed by wild elephants in southwest China's Yunnan Province, said local authorities on Friday.

Yao Zhengyang, who worked at a national nature reserve research institute in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, went missing around 5 p.m. on Thursday while observing wild elephants in Mengwang Township, according to the prefecture's publicity office.

Police found his body at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, apparently killed by the elephants.

Wild Asian elephants have first-level national protection. There have been several attacks in Xishuangbanna, home to 250 to 300 wild elephants, in recent years. In June, a villager was killed and his wife injured by an elephant while working on their farm in the prefecture.
