Senior official Liu Yunshan on Tuesday urged writers and artists to feature realism and patriotism in their work.

Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, was speaking at a meeting on "promoting the prosperous development of China's literature and art industries."

Two important criterion of literature and art should be whether they show the real lives of the people and if they bring social benefits, he said.

Liu called on the cultural authority to advance reforms and address systemic loopholes to motivate writers and artists. Measures should encourage creatives to focus on the "Chinese dream," he said.

High-caliber work should be representative of the times we live in, Liu added.

In response to Liu's comments, industry representatives at the meeting agreed to actively produce more works and spread the "positive energy."
